Winda Shimizu, Executive Director
For many years, Winda has been immersed in the world of art, any art!
As Executive Director of the Hayward Arts Council, a non-profit 501(c)3, she passionately pursues the organization's mission of making art accessible to the community. Winda coordinates rotating exhibits in six different galleries in Hayward, presenting the works of emerging and professional artists in a variety of media, with emphasis on exploring cultural diversity. She regularly hosts receptions and art classes where local artists share their talent with the public.
As commissioner of the Alameda County Arts Commission she has provided opportunities for veterans to present their work.
In her role as Create CA Arts Now Ambassador, Winda highlights work done by Hayward students, and is advisor to the Hayward Foundation for the Arts, which provides scholarships for senior high school art students.
Winda serves as a board member of the Foundation for the Arts in Alameda County, and was a former president of ART., Inc. in Castro Valley.
As a member of the Hayward Japanese American Art Project Team, she championed the permanent installation of the Japanese Memorial in Hayward Heritage Plaza, paying homage to the WWII incarceration of U.S. citizens because of their Japanese lineage. In 2018, Winda was inducted in the Women's Hall of Fame for Culture and Art.
Winda was born in Puerto Rico, the eldest of three daughters. She came to California in 1989 to attend Golden Gate University where she earned her Master's degree in Public Relations and Public Affairs. She is bilingual and bicultural in Spanish and English.
Winda is committed to promoting the work of local artists to enrich the life of her community.
